In Through the Magic Door (1907), Doyle gives readers a guided tour of his personal library, revealing the authors he admired, the shelves he organized by theme, and the literary heroes who shaped him. In this video, I break down what kind of reader Doyle really was - not the public myth, but the man behind the study door.

If you have been following this series, you have already seen what kind of reader Sherlock Holmes would have been, and what Dr. Watson likely kept on his shelves. Now we step into Doyle’s own study and ask:

Was he primarily a historian?

A romantic?

A patriot?

A spiritual seeker?

A lover of adventure and chivalry?

Drawing directly from Through the Magic Door, we look at the authors he praises, the genres he organizes, and what that reveals about his imagination. The result is a portrait of a deeply rooted Victorian reader who loved courage, honor, historical sweep, and moral clarity.
Understanding Doyle as a reader changes how we understand the Holmes stories themselves.
If you are participating in the Sherlock Holmes reading event this month, this video adds essential context. And if you are simply curious about how great writers are shaped by the books they love, this one is for you.
