I've been playing Rainbow Six casually since its beta debut. I've occasionally uploaded content for it upon this page. So needless to say, I was pretty excited when they announced that they'd be adding in zombies. What I didn't know however, was just how in depth the zombies would actually be. I would compare the zombie categories to "Left 4 Dead" zombies. You essentially have your smokers, stalkers, tanks, & witches. Everything frantically runs at you, & they're all coated with heavy spikes. If this were any other game, I would praise that type of unique approach. But unfortunately because this is "Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six," I would have preferred more realistic and believable zombies as opposed to ENTIRE LEVELS wreaking of the same aesthetic as the zombies that inhabit them. I also feel as though the entire visual effect of your surroundings is counter immersive. The Tom Clancy games tend to cling hard to realistic concepts, so throwing in a chaotic red storm like the one we observe on Jupiter is a step backward in the franchise. Atleast in my opinion it is. But what this all boils down to is gameplay....
And here's the million dollar question! Is the gameplay really worth it? This Outbreak mode mixes things up by blending defends alongside attackers. Only a handful of them can actually be used however. So if you happen to be a Caviera main, forget it! She's not available in this mode. It really is a shame that they haven't found some way to incorporate every single operator. So if that wasn't bad enough, you also only have 2 other players assisting you. Hopefully the lack of options here is just the early phase (since the footage was captured via test servers.) Eventually I'd like to see this become 5 player co-op with full range of all operators. But I digress; once your boots are on the ground it only gets more hectic. Normal mode seems to be relatively reasonable minus the latency issues (due to it being a test server.) But for the hardest difficulty available where friendly fire is an additional obstacle, this may prove to be too much! Friendly fire is an issue without so many enemies flooding you from all sides in modes such as Terrorist Hunt, & Multiplayer, but now that you're subjected to a mass of bullet sponges who swarm and bum rush from all sides, shooting, grenading, or trapping your team-mates is very difficult to avoid. What this does to the mode as a whole is make it far more frustrating. Rainbow Six has always been slow methodical based room clearing, so introducing a game mode that encourages you to shoot like a mad man on fire, not only defies the game logic, but it can also be punishing to the comrades you accidentally harm!
After all the debates, and rationalization of what this game mode actually is, I can concur that it is still fun and addictive despite all of its drawbacks. Test servers are severely bugged, so its hard to stay connected to a full game for the entirety of the playthrough, but when you do, you feel as though you've survived a hellacious nightmare. My final verdict for "Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege Outbreak" is a 6 out of 10. It is above average and offers diversity to the base game. If you can overlook the lack of options and counter productivity here then you're already fully prepared for the evil undead. The missions take too long and the reknown gain isn't nearly worth it. So it may be played a few times before it gets old played out.
