What is TMS therapy—and how can it help people with treatment-resistant depression?

In this video, Dr. Katharine Marder, a psychiatrist at UC Davis Health, explains how transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) works. TMS is a noninvasive treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation, attention, and behavior. By targeting these brain circuits, TMS can help rewire connections linked to depression—including for patients who haven’t responded to medication.
