The banking sector is a frequently criticized industry, which has, among other things, been heavily responsible for the financial crisis. Is it possible to imagine a banking system that operates according to other principles than profit maximization? Could banks be institutions where your savings will be invested in profitable, sustainable projects?

Rethinking Economics Norway has invited the Institute for Social Banking in Berlin, Ekobanken in Sweden and the Norwegian Cultura Bank to look at new solutions for the banking sector. In addition, Morten Søberg will talk about the Norwegian savings bank tradition. What previous experiences can a social banking sector build on?

Economist Sanika Nele Hufeland is the general manager of the Institute for Social Banking in Berlin - a member organization for teaching, networking and research on sustainable banking and finance. She is works for change and innovation in the financial sector and promotes the movement for a social banking sector internationally. In addition, she has initiated the Conscious FinTech Meetups in Berlin and has started an international women's network in alternative finance.

Kristoffer Lüthi is the head of credit and vice-manager at Ekobanken in Sweden. He holds a MSc in Business and Economics from Uppsala University and extensive experience from banking and business. Ecobanken is an ethical bank open to all everyone who promotes people's opportunity to take free initiatives. They see money as a social medium that will contribute to human cooperation. Public service and membership are their main driving force (from the websites ekobanken.se).

Kjell Fredrik Løvold is the general manager of Cultura Bank. He is a solicitor with a long background from the banking system. For the second consecutive year, Cultura Bank was named Norway's most ethical bank in 2017. Cultura Bank was launched in 1997 with the purpose of starting a banking business where money was considered not only as an end in itself, but as a tool to create social justice and a better environment.

Morten Søberg is an economist with doctorate in experimental economics. Today he works as director of authority contact in the SpareBank 1 Group. He is also a member of the Norges Bank Board of Representatives and has previously been State Secretary at the Ministry of Finance.

The conversation is moderated by Marie Storli from Rethinking Economics Norway, and took place at Litteraturhuset in Oslo on August 28th 2018.
