Quick look at what root motion is and why you probably want a root bone on your Mixamo character. Animations are generally parented to the controller and its capsule, and yet, an animation can also leave or deviate from the capsule like a child can leave a parent. However, when root motion is enabled, essentially the capsule or controller becomes parented to the child or animation, and then the controller and its capsule goes where the animation goes.
