Today, August 7, is Purple Heart Day, commemorating service members wounded or killed by opposing forces. Countless recipients, including active service members, veterans, and DoD civilians have received the Purple Heart.

The medal features the profile of Gen. George Washington, who established its precursor, the Badge of Military Merit, in 1782. Originally awarded to only three Revolutionary War Soldiers, the honor was revived on the bicentennial of Washington's birth (February 22, 1932). Gen. Douglas MacArthur received the very first modern Purple Heart.
