What is open gate and why does it matter?

It's just the ability for the camera to use the entire sensor to record video. Most cameras actually crop off the top and bottom portion of the sensor when you record video.

While open gate on it's own may not be a big deal, open gate + more resolution is where video recording + editing possibilities really open up.
