Monkeypox is here, folks. Thousands of cases of monkeypox have been reported in countries where, historically, the virus is not endemic. But this virus isn’t new. In fact, Monkeypox is currently endemic in parts of West and Central Africa and scientists have known about the virus infecting humans since as early as 1970. So what changed? The Vitals team, along with epidemiologist, Dr. Anne Rimoin, are here to demystify the most common misconceptions about monkeypox, explain what we know about the virus (a lot) and how concerned you need to be. We’ll also ask why the initial signs of the outbreak were missed, and what can be done to shore up the defenses of the U.S. and the rest of the world.
