One of the most important verses of the entire Hebrew Bible is Deuteronomy 6:5. "And you will love the LORD your God with all your heart..." Jesus quotes this verse when he answers a question about the greatest commandment. So what does "love" mean? We could have a deep conversation about the meaning of love (with or without referencing Haddaway), to discuss what we think love is, but ultimately what matters most is understanding what Jesus is saying. Since he is quoting Deuteronomy, understanding what the the author of Deuteronomy who was inspired by the Holy Spirit intended is essential. Once we understand that Deuteronomy belongs to the ancient Near Eastern treaty genre, many insights are unlocked. One of these insights is the meaning of "love."
