Generation Moon is the first part of a space adventure trilogy for 8-12 year olds. Instead of doing the usual thing of finding a publisher to make it and market it, I have decided to become a publisher myself.
The reason I’m doing this is because I want the books out now and not in two year’s time.
I want this trilogy to be a huge success. Writing a book is not enough. It needs to be made and marketed, so readers know it exists.
I have chosen to begin by making a special limited edition, made for fans and collectors which I will be marketing and promoting through Kickstarter.
What is Kickstarter?
This is what it says on the kickstarter website
Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of ambitious, innovative, and imaginative ideas that are brought to life through the direct support of others
Everything on Kickstarter must be a project with a clear goal, like making an album, a book, or a work of art. A project will eventually be completed, and something will be produced by it.
Kickstarter is not a store, backers pledge to projects to help them come to life and support a creative process. To thank their backers for their support, project creators offer unique rewards that speak to the spirit of what they're hoping to create.
Basically, people who want to make stuff put their idea up on the Kickstarter website. They determine what they need to kickstart their idea and make it a reality. Then they ask for support from fans and people who like the idea and offer various rewards, making their supporters feel a part of the creation process.
It’s not a shop. It’s not a money making scheme, it’s a way to imagine something new and make it real. Not a finished product but the beginning of something – giving it a kickstart through funding and publicity and the building of a fan base – wouldn’t it be great to say “Oh yeah! Harry potter would never have been made without me!” I’d love you to be able to puf out your cheast and say something like that about Generation Moon
So, on the 1st of Feb, I’ll be launching a kickstarter campaign to ask for your support to get this Generation Moon Trilogy off the ground with the first book. The story is written the illustrations nearly finished.
I’ll be making a limited, numbered signed collector’s edition of the book plus other exciting rewards to make it even more enticing and exciting. Keep them safe in a cellophane bag and they may even become valuable one day – though I’m not saying they are an investment!
I’ll be asking you to pledge your support. The edition will only be made and you will only be charged if the campaign is successful.
My aim is to generate interest and excitement in the project. One thing that gains interest is the speed with which a campaign reaches it’s target. (it’s all about getting the algorithm to notice you these days!) That’s why I am putting a lot of effort into attracting your attention and support before launch day. I’d really like the campaign to be fully supported within hours!
Having sent out all the rewards, I’ll be left with extra copies I can send out for reviews before I make the trade edition available through shops and amazon etc three months later – reviews from influencers are a really important part of marketing.
If you’ve been watching me over the years, I hope you will want to help me get this project off the ground and feel you played a tiny part of what I’m intending will be something big.
I’ve written over 200 children’s books over the last 35 years or so, but this one is different for me. I can’t really explain why but this is the one I really want to put all my weight behind to promote so that readers at least know it’s there. Every book deserves a chance, but if readers don’t know it exists, they’ll never get to read it.
