Only about 10% or less of the coral reef in Florida is healthy and thriving, 2023 estimates from NOAA say. But what can we do to help them? Well, IVF for coral, of course.
Just last week, several organizations were stationed in the Florida Keys to catch the annual spawning of elkhorn coral. Once the coral spawns, scientists can take the collected egg and sperm bundles back to the lab and help fertilize the eggs, Reef Institute executive director Leneita Fix told me. This gives coral babies a headstart when they are put back in the ocean to grow.
