Donald Trump likes calling his political opponents communists. But what is communism, and where did it come from?
The communist world lost its unity fast. The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia under Josip Broz "Tito" broke with Stalin in 1948, developed its own socialist model and later helped found the Non-Aligned Movement. Albania went the opposite way: it remained fiercely Stalinist, broke with the USSR amid Khrushchev's de-Stalinization, aligned with Mao's China — and eventually broke with China too, becoming one of Europe's most isolated states.
