![Wiped Film Evaporation and Hemp Processing
If you’ve ever seen that beautiful, golden CBD distillate and wondered to yourself, “how do they make that?” The answer lies in wiped film evaporators. In this presentation, extraktLAB founder, president and CEO, and separations scientist, Jon Thompson, discusses the ins and outs of wiped film evaporation including equipment, methodology, best operating processes and much much more. When it comes to creating a quality CBD distillate product, wiped film evaporation is absolutely critical. Wiped film evaporation refers to evaporation of cannabinoid rich oils from a hot surface as a wiper creates a thin film on the evaporation surface. Wiped film apparatuses used in hemp and botanical distillation are not usually fixed distance but typically use “comb” shaped wipers to mix the oil on the surface of the oil while simultaneously creating a thin film at the surface. A thin film is important so that efficient evaporation can occur. Since distillation using wiped film evaporation is much faster, wiped film equipment is generally considered a more gentle way to distill an oil. The time that the oil experiences exposure to high heat is short, so many reactive compounds do not have time to react and degrade the residue or distillate. Typical residence time in wiped film equipment is on the order of minutes. To find out more about this critical step in creating CBD distillate, listen to Dr. Jon’s presentation on Wiped Film Evaporation and Hemp Processing.

How Falling Film Evaporator Works
Falling film evaporator utilize heated tubular evaporation chambers to separate liquid solvent based on their boiling points. An array of vertical tubes enable efficient heat transfer while preserving the integrity of the product oil. In hemp processing or extraction, this step is required to concentrate the oil and recover the liquid solvent.
The Falling Film Evaporator process starts by pumping ethanol into a distributor that introduces ethanol to the vertical tubes. “Falling film” refers to a thin film that is created as the ethanol or liquid solvent falls down the inside of the heated vertical metal tubing that is heated by circulating oil on the outside of the tubes. Optimal heat transfer on the walls of these tubes allows ethanol oil or other liquid solvent mixtures to evaporate at a high throughput rate before condensing on a chilled collector.
Vacuum systems are incorporated into the equipment to lower the boiling point of ethanol and improve mass transfer. The vacuum is maintained in each stage of the process with a single vacuum pump that is monitored by the system to maximize performance.
Unlike most falling film evaporators, however, fracTron is able to independently pump liquid from stage to stage, control temperature, pressure and other variables in each of its three-stages making it optimal for total solvent evaporates without secondary processing.
fracTron removes ethanol from extracts with extraktLAB’s falling film evaporator equipment. The fracTron is a three-stage, fractional solvent distillation machine. fracTron is customizable, enables automated GMP process control, while supporting 40gal/hour continuous process flow.
