Biliary colic is characterized by severe right-sided upper abdominal pain. It typically starts after a meal and can last for several hours. Some people feel nauseated and can even vomit.
Biliary colic is caused by a gallstone that gets stuck in the duct that connects the gallbladder to the bile ducts.
Initial treatment involves pain relief. A cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder) prevents further attacks and possible complications.
