Discover what a tornado is and how these rotating columns of air generate the most destructive winds on Earth. Learn about their formation from storm clouds, the different types such as waterspouts, and how the Enhanced Fujita Scale measures their intensity.
A tornado is a high-speed rotating column of air in the shape of a funnel that connects storm clouds to the Earth's surface, capable of causing severe structural damage. When its base develops over a body of water, it is classified as a waterspout, whereas it is simply called a tornado when it occurs over land.
To quantify their intensity and destructive potential, meteorologists use the Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF), which ranges from EF0 (weakest winds) to EF5 (most devastating and destructive winds). The most intense and dangerous tornadoes are typically generated within supercell storms. Historical data shows that extreme events, such as the 1999 tornado in Bridge Creek or the 2013 El Reno tornado in Oklahoma, registered maximum wind speeds of 500 km/h, with the latter reaching a record width of 4.2 kilometers.
