A little history lesson. In December 2023, Kingston showed off the industry’s first 64GB DDR5 UDIMM—built using new high-density 32Gbit DRAM chips, more compact and efficient than previous 16Gbit chips. What does that mean for your PC build? This video explains.
First of all, it’s important to clear up the confusion. Gb with a little b means gigabit, while GB with a big B means gigabyte. They look similar but are different measurements of memory capacity. A bit (small b) is a binary digit, a one or zero, or an on or off electrical charge, the smallest unit in computing. A byte (big B), is a group of eight bits, needed to form the language of computing. Kingston spells out Gbit to try and make it less confusing, but for others that don’t, remember: big B, byte, small b, bit.

This matters because individual DRAM chips, the little squares on your DRAM, usually in black, are measured in gigabits, while memory modules or DIMMs are measured in gigabytes. High-density gigabit chips make higher capacity modules possible.

This means 32Gbit chips are a game changer. The higher-density chips mean more memory in the same physical space. Memory manufacturers can use the same printed circuit boards (PCBs) to make different capacity modules with different density DRAM chips, so higher capacities like 64GB become possible using the same PCB you’d use for 32GB. Higher-capacity PCs can be built, like 128GB with two modules, or even 256GB with four.

What does that mean for performance? More memory means your system is more capable of multi-tasking. Gaming and streaming with a browser full of tabs, for example, or working with large datasets, 3D rendering, even training AI models—higher-capacity RAM makes everything smoother. It particularly helps with small form factor builds, since space is limited but performance still matters. Denser memory means fewer modules are necessary, helping compact systems and also negating performance penalties from installing multiple DIMMs.
Another benefit: 32GB modules of 32Gbit DRAM run cooler and are more energy-efficient since they only need half the number of chips. Remember that older DDR5 systems may need a BIOS update before you install new densities of DRAM, but today’s Intel and AMD platforms should be ready right away. Check the Kingston website to confirm your system is compatible with the new modules before you go all in.

At the end of the day, 32Gbit RAM isn’t only about bigger numbers, but also smarter design. Higher memory density means more efficient higher-capacity systems that use fewer components and less space. It means better multi-tasking, more flexibility, and more powerful builds.
