What Inclusivity Should Look Like Today!
When I had this wonderful conversation with Britni Camacho, Aliyah Orozco and Stephanie Elyse on @latvlatina about representation in games, we got to dig in to not just how the world can do better at inclusion, but how we can make the process even more inviting and appealing as people aiming to be more heard. I believe that when we put the pressure on ourselves or on one person or show or game to be a voice for an entire demographic, we not only make it difficult for others who don’t know about our culture to but also for ourselves to truly see the unique, complex, varied human experiences we have as individuals. It’s not just about seeing someone on screen who looks like you, it’s about seeing someone on screen like that who you can connect with because they are a full human - not defined any one thing. As storytellers we have the opportunity to invite people into our culture through story, and those stories can be as varied and complex as each human who tells them, or we block them from seeing the unique beauty of each one of us.
With recent TV shows like Lee Sung Jin’s BEEF & Lulu Wang’s Expats and games like @playOverwatch and @playapex where we see diverse characters with deep lore, complex humans being portrayed with their full humanity, we normalize not just the appearance of characters who look like the world around us, but the beautiful, flawed complexity of all of us. We invite people IN to our stories by letting them know that we all have so much more to us than one thing. We let our culture be a part of us that informs who we are, but doesn’t define it - each and every one of us can CHOOSE how to tell our story.
I’m so grateful to all of the people around the world who are leaning in to the excitement of telling these deep, lush, heart opening stories in all of the ways they can. The world is all the better for it.
