Just dug up a clip from a gig in London about a month ago.

Sax player put me on the spot and said on the mic: “We haven’t had a bass solo tonight… who wants to hear one?”

Everyone cheered… so I guess I had no choice haha 😅

This solo was over Kirk Franklin’s version of O Come All Ye Faithful, built on a simple C minor groove.

Most of my teenage life I played jazz sax, so I studied tons of soloing concepts.

I’m focusing on telling a story rather than showing off technique.

Too many long lines or fast chops and people zone out.

Midway through this solo, I noticed the 16th-note lines were starting to blend together, so I did something to re-engage the audience.

The audience member who filmed this video didn’t catch the full end, but essentially from the last idea I play, the solo builds back into the chorus.
