Did scientists “create life” in a lab?

The most common approach is called a “top down” method, where scientists take an already living cell and edit the DNA to strip it down to the bare minimum needed and then to place that DNA into a host cell.

This is groundbreaking, but it still requires a living cell. Recently scientists at the University of Minnesota used a different approach, one that truly starts from scratch and they created something that looks remarkably similar to life… but is it?
