There are of course many AUs like this, but I really wanted to make my version
Here Scar never found Mufasa's body, just some blood and fur on the ground, so he thought Mufasa's remains were destroyed by the herd and Mufasa is gone.
Scar told Simba to run away, but he didn't have the nerve to tell the hayenas to kill Simba, he was devastated by all that happened and assumed Simba would not survive anyway.
Scar in this AU has always been in love with Sarabi, she loved him in the beginning, but then moved on and fell deeply in love with Mufasa.
Scar tries to make Sarabi see they still can be together, like before, a new king and queen.
But Sarabi doesn't think so. She loves Mufasa and finds Scar just annoying and a much worse king than Mufasa was, even if Scar is not as bad as his was in canon.
He declines his feelings again in a rude way, the hayenas try to defend Scar, they feel kind of sorry for him. Sarabi calls Scar "not worthy", Scar, unable to handle it, hits her.
And here Mufasa appears, alive and furious. He was saved by The Night Guard members who were helping some animals near the Pridelands and wanted to see what caused the stampede. They took Mufasa to The Tree Of Life, he was terribly wounded, it took him years to fully recover and come back to the Pridelands.
He confronts Scar, asks about Simba, Scar says "he ran away, I never killed him", without saying the whole truth.
Mufasa still can't believe how Scar could actually do it, almost killing him, Scar reveals his dreaming about ruling and being with Sarabi.
Sarabi says she loves only Mufasa and Scar is nothing but a murderer. Shocked, Scar sees it all clear: Sarabi would never love him again, he failed to be a great king, he failed all his dreams.
Mufasa exiles Scar, Scar leaves, numb and devastated.
Years later a new princess, Kiara, is born, Sarabi could give birth to another cub. Scar is watching the ceremony from the distance, full of remorse and bitter feelings. He often comes into the Pridelands, lurks in the shadows, sees how life goes on without him, leaves. He leaves now too.
Kiara is growing, she loves exploring. Mufasa and Sarabi are worried about her, they are afraid to lose their daughter like they lost Simba, but they do want her to be happy, so they allow her to wander.
They only ask her not to go far, but she does. One day she discovers Scar's cave and talks to him.
Scar is full of memories and sorrow, Kiara feels sorry for him, she liked Scar and is excited to meet a new lion. She says they could be friends, and for the first time in years Scar feels a warmth inside his heart, even if he doesn't believe this friendship could last. But could it?
It's up to you what happened to Simba in this AU. But I believe he survived too. Maybe he was saved like Timon and Pumbaa like in canon, Nala never ran away and found him, so he lives in the jungles.
Maybe he was rescued by some other pride. Maybe he was captured by humans and put in the Zoo, maybe taken to Europe and lives in the Zoo, maybe he ran away from the Zoo and lives in the forest.
