My deep dive into the character design, clothing, worldbuilding, and ambient dialogue of NPCs from Kingdom Hearts 3, after I spent a year watching and photographing NPCs.
KH3 is fascinating because in adapting worlds from a variety of different properties, it pulls details from each of those properties in vastly different ways. Let's dive into how it tackles its Disney worlds: the 3D animated, the adapted from 2D, and the adapted from live action... and of course, how it tackles the townspeople of its beloved original world Twilight Town. How do the game's NPCs compare to the vibes established by their source material? As a camera-wielding Sora might say... "Let's see!"
This video is excerpted from a longer deep dive into several games I photographed NPCs in. See below.

![Why Horizon Forbidden West Restored a Demolished Building
In Horizon Forbidden West, you wake up in a bunker full of famous Dutch art right after one of the most dramatic scenes in the game. I think its the weirdest moment in the whole game but I also think its one of the best.
All of the art was brought in as part of a collaboration between Guerrilla Games and the Rijksmuseum Art Museum in Amsterdam but that isnt the only real-life history influencing the scene. Lets take a closer look at Tildas Mansion, AKA the bunker, and the ruinous vestiges of its actual counterpart in Big Sur, CA.

BEHIND THE SCENES:
Correction in the video: Tilda asks Aloy to breakfast, not lunch. Doesnt really matter because these people barely touch their food!
Big Sur was an incredibly cool trip to make. We were up there for a wedding, so shout out to my now-wed buds and we had almost zero internet while up there. It was really cool to get to learn so much through trail markers, books, and just talking to people. Id recently finished HFW, so it was also the perfect time to find out about Waterfall House. BEHIND THE SCENES:
Here is a scrapped moment from the script:
The only joke I felt truly mixed about was in the game’s epilogue. After saving the company and restoring it to its rightful owner, Chai gets a job there — and there’s a little joke about how hes not getting paid.
[Insert quote here from Chai reflecting on his new unpaid job]
…And I get it! It’s fine. But I do think it is weird to use the same style of humor as they use for all the NPCs under Kale’s rule… in a moment we’re supposed to believe the company can be different. Can be better. I’m not saying this couldn’t have been a funny moment. Chai is a pretty goofy, irreverent character. Does he have “ideas” for this job? Was hiring him even a smart decision? Here, the game chooses self-deprecation in a moment it could have chosen triumph or irreverence instead — and probably told a more unique joke.
^ I decided to cut this because its the only moment that necessitated full spoilers, but it was a genuine point of critique for me. It reminded me of Parker Johnsons excellent article We Need to Drop the Savior Narrative On the Tango Gameworks Acquisition https://paletteswap.site/true-colors/we-need-to-drop-the-savior-narrative-on-the-tango-gameworks-acquisition/ .
Disability is also a major theme in the game when it comes to the human characters but I didnt feel qualified to go deep into that. I chose to focus on the robot NPCs and what the game has to say about labor instead.
It was nice to make a simpler, back-to-basics NPC photography episode again with this one! Hi-Fi Rush wasnt super high on the priority list for me initially, but thats part of what made the process feel more low-stakes and enjoyable. That also paired nicely with the tone of the game.
