In this video, I share one of the most valuable lessons I learned early in my journey of seeking knowledge: how to ask your shaykh or teacher questions with proper etiquette. I recount an embarrassing experience I had when I asked my first shaykh a poorly phrased question in Arabic. It taught me that asking questions isn't just about getting answers-it's about being considerate of the shaykh's time and respecting their role as a teacher.
Here's the key: preparation. Before you ask, write down your question. Avoid adding unnecessary details about your personal experience-just get straight to the point. This simple approach not only saves time but also helps you gain more respect from your teacher.
I also dive into the wisdom I gained from scholars and books. One of the most impactful ideas I came across is that learning adab (manners and etiquette) is crucial-often even more important than the answers you seek. A well-mannered student is a pleasure for any teacher to guide, and this relationship makes the learning experience more meaningful for both sides.
If you're serious about learning and want to grow in your studies, learning how to ask questions the right way is essential. In this video, I'll share how this small change can transform your relationship with your shaykh and your journey of seeking knowledge.
