What I Eat in a Day, my fitness planner, and a brief overview of the P90X Fat Shredder plan. (NOT a sponsored video)
A little background - I injured my back in May of 2014, and had surgery in January of 2016 - spinal decompression at the T5-6 level. Prior to my injury, I was in good physical shape - I exercised daily, and was an avid tennis player. My husband and I enjoyed travelling several times a year. I had just retired from a 35 year career in an office environment. This injury was devastating to me. Between May 2014 and January 2016, I kept trying to resume some form of physical activity, but my body kept letting me down. The pain from the nerve impingement was severe - often confining me to bed for days at a time. It was the worst experience of my life. Despite my efforts to remain hopeful and positive, I got severely depressed. The depression caused me to overeat, and to eat all the wrong foods. The more I ate, the worse I felt. The worse I felt, the more I ate. I gained 20+ pounds and lost a lot of muscle mass. It could have been much worse, though - I did manage to eat healthy(ish) most of the time, otherwise the situation today would probably have been much worse. I could not wait to resume some form of physical activity, and to get my life back. My short term goal is to get back on the tennis court by the end of May 2016.
I was given medical clearance to begin exercising immediately after surgery, so I consulted a physiotherapist, and began light exercise in February. To be completely honest, the pain has continued to be an issue, but I have to keep reminding myself that although it hurts, and that sucks, it is not doing any harm. (hurt vs. harm) In addition to the exercise, I am resuming my healthy eating, in an effort to lose the 20 pounds that I gained, and, more importantly, to start feeling like myself again. This video is one of the ways in which I am attempting to be accountable to myself, and to share any tips or tricks along the way. I do have a (poorly neglected) health and fitness blog - where I have shared some of my story from a couple of years ago, along with some recipes.
