What happens when a prosecutor looks at a politically explosive case, reviews the evidence, and concludes that the law simply doesn't support the charges the mob is demanding? I believe several of America's most notorious cases give us the answer: resist the pressure, and you may lose your career—or find yourself targeted next.
In today's show, I trace what I see as the same pattern through the prosecutions surrounding Derek Chauvin, George Zimmerman, Darren Wilson, and the defendants convicted in the death of Ahmaud Arbery. I explain how veteran prosecutors who declined to bring charges saw their careers end, how outside prosecutors were brought in after local authorities resisted prosecution, and how former Georgia prosecutor Jackie Johnson ultimately found herself criminally prosecuted after recusing herself from the Arbery case—charges that were later dismissed.
I also walk through the evidence and legal issues underlying these cases, including the original prosecutorial analysis of the Arbery shooting and the disputed interpretation of Georgia's old citizen's-arrest statute.
