AI systems can potentially be used to monitor other AI systems, but that approach assumes the monitoring system will correctly identify problematic behavior. The argument here is that AI will inevitably make mistakes when making judgments about what is good, bad, or acceptable.
Being correct most of the time may not be enough for high-consequence systems. If an AI monitor misses the wrong behavior at the wrong moment, the additional layer of AI oversight can create a false sense of security rather than meaningful control.
When the consequences of failure are high, should AI oversight rely on another AI system or stronger controls and limits?
