What happens when a bomb explodes and how can we use this information to save lives?

Over the last 50 years there’s been a shift in explosives from big nuclear bombs to smaller improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. Now, IEDs are used throughout the world with devastating consequences. The problem is that they’re really hard to defend against because we don’t really know explosions work at such close distances.
