Retiring early sounds great; but it can quietly impact one of your most important income sources. Today, I’m breaking down how retiring before your full career plays out with Social Security and why a lot of people overestimate what they’ll actually receive. Your benefit is based on your 35 highest earning years, so if you retire at 55 without a full earnings history, those missing years get filled in with zeros, lowering your average. Even if you have 35 years, retiring early can replace your highest-earning years with lower ones, reducing your benefit. I’ll also explain why the estimates you see online can be overly optimistic, how the gap between retirement and age 62 creates real planning challenges, and why claiming early can lock in a permanent reduction.
