Light journeys across an ocean of spacetime to reach our telescopes, but to produce an image light waves must align on the camera sensor just how they started when they began their journey from objects countless trillions of kilometers away. But what exactly is focused light, and how does it make the difference between a sharp verses a blurry image?
Viewers should be aware that terminology among various sources regarding the science of focus is, to put it mildly, blurry. Really, really blurry! So many concepts have similar sounding names yet different meanings, i.e., "focus plane", "focal plane", "focus point" and "focal length", to name a few. Not to mention that different sources refer to these things by different names. Because "focal length" has several different meanings depending on context, I did not even reference it in this video as it would have added 20 minutes worth of rabbit holes. No wonder focus is something even experts flounder over. In the video, I have tried to deal with this by choosing what seems to be the most common or clearest terms and using those terms consistently throughout the episode.
