What happens inside a #genomics lab—and why does it matter for patients and families?
At UW Medicine’s Eichler Lab, researchers are working to better understand the full human genome, including regions of DNA that were once too complex to study. This work has helped identify genetic contributors linked to some neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism, developmental disabilities, and epilepsy.
At the same time, a more complete and representative human genome has implications far beyond neurodevelopment. It strengthens researchers’ ability to study genetic risk across many areas of medicine, including cancer and other diseases, and can help inform future treatments in those areas.
