For as long as video games have been a thing, Nintendo has been the frontrunner when it comes to portable gaming. As far back as 1980, the company has been creating games that can be played on the go, with the game-and-watch selling millions of units. From then on, they’ve been consistently creating bestselling mobile products, such as the game boy, game boy advance and DS. Given their long history of portable gaming, it made sense for them to bring their iconic franchises to phones. Since 2016 we’ve seen games from their biggest IP’s come to phones, with titles such as super Mario run, animal crossing pocket camp, and Mario Kart tour. It only makes sense that the legend of Zelda would come next, and rumours seemed to point to that. But here we are in 2023, with no Zelda game on mobile…. What happened?
The Zelda mobile game rumours began circulating in early 2018 when The Wall Street Journal reported that Nintendo and DeNA were working on a mobile game based on the Legend of Zelda franchise. The report suggested that the game would be released by the end of 2018, and would be a part of Nintendo's ongoing push into the mobile gaming market. But 2018 has come and gone, with no sight of the game. In the years that followed, Nintendo released several other mobile games, like Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Fire Emblem Heroes and Mario Kart tour, but no mention was ever made of the rumored Zelda mobile game. So whats going on with it?
One reason we haven’t seen it yet is likely the success of breath of the wild. If Nintendo was making mobile games as a sort of safety net in case their mainline games failed, then they wouldn’t really see a need to bring a Zelda game to phones yet, because breath of the wild has already sold over 20 million units. Breath of the wild definitely introduced a ton of new people to the franchise, so for them, it may be the only Zelda game they know of, and if the company were to take a different approach to a mobile version, it may confuse players and lead to similar criticism to Mario run, where its too different from the source material.
