Los Altos is a special place for so many reasons, not the least of which is that the modern day ancestors of the Maya people still live there. The region has seen conflict and civil unrest and is a hotbed for the Guerilla militant group known as the Zapatistas, or EZLN. Despite its rocky past, Los Altos is a place of exceptional beauty, with an amazing people and culture.
While in Mexico we had the opportunity to visit Los Altos very often as we did service through our church and other non profit organizations such as the Escalera Foundation and Interweave Solutions. These non-profits help provide educational opportunities for the children living in the poverty stricken region as well as solutions to promote literacy and a better life.
