HALABELLA | What Happened To Kenyanthropus platyops? @halabella6 | Uploaded October 2021 | Updated October 2024, 9 hours ago.
I keep saying and I will say it again. Human evolution research is never simple. Hominin fossils are rare and hard to find and more often than not, no sooner do anthropologists announce a big discovery then other researchers argue that they have it wrong. This is the exact case with this species that we are going to discuss today.
In 1999, a research team led by scientist Meave Leakey discovered aroughly 3.5-million-year-old hominid skullfrom the Lake Turkana region of Northern Kenya. Now, 3 and a half million years ago was the time when the hype was all about Australopithecus afarensis, the species to which the famous Lucy belongs to. Therefore, scientists disagree over whether this skull is a flat-faced species of hominid or just a distorted skull of an individual of Australopithecus afarensis.
