The remains of 117 dogs were dug up earlier this year at Miranda's Rescue in Humboldt County, and now there are calls for accountability as the investigation intensifies.
Following reports of potential animal cruelty happening at the rescue, the Humboldt County Sheriff served a search warrant at the rescue and said 117 dogs were excavated from two holes on the property, the deepest being about 12 to 15 feet.
"The dogs were layered," the sheriff said at a news conference.
"You can tell that there were different times that the various dogs were put in, and according to our timeline, through evidence, it was determined that the dogs were buried here sometime after January, between January and April 2026," said Sheriff William Honsal.
Honsal said 70 of the dogs were X-rayed on site, and many showed evidence of bullet fragments. Veterinarians on the scene preliminarily determined that many of the dogs died from gunshot wounds.
Investigators also recovered microchips from the scene, Honsal said.
As the investigation continues, a civil lawsuit has now been filed.
Bay Area rescue group, Rocket Dog Rescue, filed the complaint July 27 in Humboldt County Superior Court against Shannon Miranda, the owner of Miranda’s Rescue. The lawsuit alleged negligence, fraud, animal cruelty and trespass to chattels involving the intentional killing of three dogs Rocket Dog entrusted to Miranda’s earlier this year.
At this time, Shannon Miranda has not been charged with anything and is still legally able to operate the shelter.
