In 1990, the BBC selected Luciano Pavarotti’s 1972 recording of “Nessun dorma” as the theme music for its World Cup broadcasts, introducing one of opera’s most celebrated arias to a global audience. With a dramatic build up to the words “Vincerò” (or “I will win”), it makes for a surprisingly fitting sports anthem!
