Are you doing the things that demonstrate true leadership? Is your boss?
Transcript:
Hi there everybody. Cameron Morrissey here, and we talk a lot about leadership here. Hey, it's the reason I do these things. You might ask yourself, what is leadership? What does it look like in action? Am I demonstrating leadership? Are my peers or our my boss demonstrating? What exactly do leaders do? Well, it really comes down to two things, and you'll notice that neither one of these require that you have a title, but these are the ways that you demonstrate leadership in your organizations. The first thing is that leaders serve others. As a leader your success is entirely reliant on the production and output of your team. Not your own production and output. Your role, if you want more success, is to make sure that your team is increasing their output and they are more successful. The way you do that is by being a resource to them. One of my favorite quotes, and I've never been able to figure out the attribution to this so if you know who said it let me know in the comments below, but that is "A leader is not an administrator who loves to run others, but one who carries water for his people so that they can get on with their jobs." Now, you might be saying I don't see that in other leaders who are successful. Yes, there are all kinds of ways to cheat yourself to success. Through politics, through bullying tactics, through any number of other things, but that's not being a leader. A true leader in the organization doesn't necessarily have the loftiest titles, or wields the most power. There the ones that serve their team best. Now the second thing that all leaders do is they make things better. Leaders aren't satisfied with the status quo. They are champions for change and all progress, all the innovation is change. I want you to think of change like compounding interest. It isn't just a linear path of progress. You build on the prior change, and the prior progress to get out sized results. There are new opportunities that always pop up when you change things, and when you looked into improve the way things are done, and progress the organization. There are new opportunities that form. It isn't just a one plus one equals two sort of thing. It is a one plus one plus one equals six sort of thing. They are champions for change. Leaders look to make things better. If you want to be a better leader than you already are there are really only two things to focus on. Find a way to serve your team better, and find a way to improve how things are done in your organization. That's leadership in action. Thanks so much everybody.
