Writing out of scene allows an author to condense time and summarize events efficiently. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the opening passage about Jem’s broken arm skips weeks of healing in just a few lines. This technique contrasts with in scene writing, where events unfold in real time.

Writing Through to Kill a Mockingbird and Writing Through The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe are video-based self-studies, made with the assumption that attentive readers can improve their own creative writing. Join Jonathan Rogers on a journey into the literary elements of these books. Admire the description, dialogue, concision and pacing of the classic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and To Kill a Mockingbird. Jonathan Rogers of Grammar for Writers teaches high school students how to improve their own creative writing by examining the literary elements of these classics.
