In this video, we learn about the meaning of irrigation through the eyes of Erfan Khalaf Al Mohammad, a 21-year-old from Samoumah village in Syria who had to flee his home in 2016 due to the conflict. Upon his return, Erfan found that the water canals, which are crucial for irrigation and his family’s ability to farm, had been cut off, making it impossible for him to attend school. However, with the assistance of the World Food Programme (WFP), Erfan and his family were able to earn a living and cultivate their land again after the water was restored.
Erfan can now pursue his agricultural studies at secondary school with the aim of becoming an agricultural engineer to further help his community. The WFP is playing a vital role in transforming lives and empowering communities in Syria. Rehabilitated irrigation canals in northern Syria are now providing 12,000 farming families with the water they needed to grow crops again and feed their families.
