Letโs get straight to the point โ the slow muscle-up is harder for 99% of people.
But the reasons are not what you expect.
Before anythingโฆ yes, I know.
Fabian didnโt actually do a โmuscle-up.โ
If that counts as one, then apparently Iโve been doing high pull-ups my entire life. ๐
So letโs pretend heโs doing a normal muscle-up so the comparison makes sense.
Now โ the nuances (and they matter):
1๏ธโฃ Grip changes everything.
Most people performing a slow muscle-up use a semi-false grip, which shortens the lever, reduces the distance, and makes the transition easier.
But guess what? You can use false grip in a fast muscle-up too โ itโs just uncomfortable, so almost nobody does it.
2๏ธโฃ Your body cheats without you noticing.
In a slow muscle-up, it is extremely hard to keep your legs straight and avoid that tiny pike.
It doesnโt look bad โ it looks like โcontrol.โ
But itโs leverage.
It makes the rep easier, and most people donโt even realize theyโre doing it.
3๏ธโฃ Specificity = king.
People learn fast muscle-ups first because the path is easier, more well-known, and honestlyโฆ because ego wants the rep.
Slow muscle-ups require patience, awareness, and a nervous system trained to stay under tension.
4๏ธโฃ Your strength balance matters.
If your pull is way stronger than your push, youโre doomed on slow muscle-ups.
You might pull your chest high, but when the bar reaches lower-chest levelโฆ
That transition with straight legs?
Different universe.
5๏ธโฃ Mobility becomes a requirement, not a luxury.
Slow muscle-ups demand more:
โข more wrist mobility (false grip tolerance)
โข more shoulder internal rotation
โข more awareness through the transition
โข more discipline to keep your legs behind the bar
When you remove the swing and keep everything strict, the truth shows up.
So whatโs my final answer?
The slow muscle-up is harder โ but it feels easier for me personally.
Because my variables are biased in my favor:
I have insane shoulder internal rotation, a lifetime of mobility work, and a nervous system built from years of slow practice, yoga, and calisthenics.
Those advantages disappear for most people.
