Shortly after departing San Francisco International Airport, the crew of United Flight 3910 received an unusual instruction from NorCal Departure: “Speed at your discretion.”
At first glance, that might sound routine. But there’s a catch. In the United States, aircraft are generally limited to 250 knots below 10,000 feet. So when the crew heard that instruction right after takeoff, they paused and asked ATC for clarification before accelerating.
