Do your kids receive gifts of money for the holidays? I'd love to hear how you handle money gifts (or gelt) for Hanukkah or Christmas. My children have their own piggybanks and bank accounts and we take the opportunity of gifts of money to make a trip to the bank so that my children can physically take it and give it to a banker to keep safe. At their current ages, we don't yet give allowance and we purchase all of my children's necessities, so the kids are not yet using their money for spending cash -- all of it goes towards college and future savings.
As for tzedakah (charity), this is a wonderful time of year when we can open our tins and deposit charity money into the receptacles at charities we support (you may see these at the Jewish Federation building, museums, zoos and aquariums that you visit, etc).
Finally, we rarely make it through all the chocolate gelt, so my solution for that leftover treat is to make slice and bake cookies, with gelt pushed into the center (bake until barely golden).
I'd love to hear your feedback. Do you prefer gifts of money, or physical things? Money is always at the top of my list to give and receive, because it really empowers the recipient.
