What Business Are You Really In?
Back in October just after my brother-in-law passed away without warning, I addressed our team about the urgency of our business. In doing so I was reminding them of the business we’re really in.
It’s a business anchored to impact. Not money, or followers, or book sales or likes. Impact.
Sure, we want to have a business that can support our 60+ employees and their desire to buy groceries and have health insurance, but that alone isn’t a “why” that’s strong enough to keep in the fight on the days when exhaustion feels overwhelming.
Our motivation is YOU. The evidence in your using these tools creates the urgency because we know when you lean in, you’ve changed your life through the books, live events and community challenges like #last90days — you do that — and neither of us have unlimited time to create or use the tools.
Time is fleeting, and we have so much more to make and so many more to affect.
So, first, a thank you to you. Thank you for embracing these tools and sharing their impact back with us. Your notes on the way you were able to persevere because of this community, these podcasts or morning show is a big part of what gives them life. Those of you who’ve used a hashtag to celebrate your wins after coaching or a live event, we feel every single one and they become the fuel for doing even more.
And, second, as we hit this New Year, when you’re looking at what business you’re really in, what life you really want in 2020, find a way to connect to something bigger than yourself, bigger than money (like instead of debt-free, how do you connect to what debt-free unlocks in homeownership or family vacations?) or a title, a number of likes on a post or listens on a podcast. You can get those things by staying focused on the value you afford others first. Your ability to be light, your ability to have an impact as your North Star will get you there faster in a way that gives you strength on the days it gets hard.
