I recently auditioned for Waitress the Musical at Zach Scott Theatre in Austin, Texas. I got called back for the role I originally auditioned for (Dawn).
But something unexpected happened...I also got a callback for the lead role!
I had never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would have been called back for the leading role (Jenna) in this show. Its a BIG emotional piece about a young mother who has an unexpected pregnancy. I was assigned a few pieces for the callback including this one called, "What Baking Can Do."
After learning this song and coaching it with my musical theatre coach, Micheal Scott Harris, I now believe this is most challenging vocal piece in the entire role. Good on the directors for asking us to sing this in the callback!
Yesterday, I received the email that told me "Unfortunately, we don't have a role for you in this production, but we look forward to considering you for future productions!"
Regardless of how the cast list looks this time, learning this piece has been such a delight and I wouldn't take back my audition experience for the world!
I would love to play Jenna someday, until then, here is a sweet taste of What Baking Can Do.
