When quilters talk about “pre-cuts”, they are talking about fabric that has been cut to a specific size.
Many sizes of pre-cut fabric exist, but the most common sizes are 2-1/2” strips, 10” squares and 5” squares.
The fabric company Moda has given these sizes the names “jelly rolls”, “layer cakes” and “charm packs”. These are trademarked names, but many quilters use these names generically to refer to the pre-cut size.
Other fabric manufacturers have copied these sizes of pre-cuts because they are so versatile. Many designers make quilt patterns with these sizes in mind.
A bundle of pre-cut fabric is a great way to get a piece of every fabric in a collection without having to buy yardage of every print.
