A view will soon be defined, across YouTube, as counting from the very first frame—whether that’s a Short appearing in the feed or a long-form video autoplaying on the Home page.
An engaged view is defined as watching past that initial first frame or clicking to watch. This has been, and will continue to be, how you qualify to earn (as long as the content is also public).
Are views now the same as thumbnail impressions?
If you see a thumbnail recommended on the home page or suggested on the watch page and don’t interact with it in any way, that remains an impression. Not a view.
If you see a thumbnail recommended on the home page or suggested on the watch page and it starts to autoplay, that is now counted as a view from the very first frame. If you let it keep playing for some amount of seconds after that first frame, it’s an engaged view
Same for a Short in the Shorts feed. The moment it starts to play, it’s a view. If you let it keep playing for some amount of seconds after that first frame, it’s an engaged view
We’ve heard some people say it previously took 30 seconds for a view to be counted. That’s simply not the case.
YouTube doesn’t specify exactly how many seconds because it can vary across surfaces, and YouTube also doesn’t want anyone focusing on gaming the metric, just making satisfying experiences for viewers
Are clicks now the same as views?
If you click on a thumbnail and start to watch a video, that was a view before, it’s a view now, and is also an engaged view. No change or difference there
So, if you were concerned this update would incentivize clickbait, hopefully this addresses that concern.
We’ve also seen some people worry about how this change will affect click-through rate, average view duration, or other metrics. TL;DR: they won’t. The vast majority of analytics remain anchored on engaged views, so no change to CTR, AVD, retention.
Likewise, no change to recommendations - the algorithm
And no change to the YouTube Partner Program, that’s based on qualified views. For more on those, hit up the related video link
