~~~~ IMPORTANT UPDATE ~~~~
This video is mostly just a proof of concept of double battles in a Gen 1 game, but it's pretty outdated compared to the progress I've made since. For the most recent update, you should watch this video instead: youtube.com/watch?v=8TRHZ0hWsaI
So yeah, I started working on another hack shortly after I finished Pokemon Pyrite. This time, it's a Pokemon Red/Blue hack being based off the Pokemon Red Full Color hack i.e. pokered-gbc: github.com/dannye/pokered-gbc. In this video I show something that I've recently finished implementing: double battles!
Feedback will be appreciated. What were your thoughts after watching the video? Was the battle easy to follow and intuitive, or did you get lost with all the Pokemon sliding ins and outs going on? This design was the best I could realistically aim for. Honestly, I didn't even bother considering keeping all 4 Pokemon on screen at once. I would have to pretty much redo the battle scenario, make resized sprites (that wouldn't look any good in the end lol), edit the attack animations... heck, I'd even have trouble assigning palettes to 4 health bars and 4 sprites simultaneously.
Note that move effects aren't implemented yet, as I will be redoing them eventually (applies to both doubles and regular battles). Same goes for the AI in general, right now it just picks a random move and target (so long as available).
Also note that when the "Pokemon 1" is slid out to be replaced with the "Pokemon 2", the Pokemon that enters the screen is supposed to slide in rather than appear like it's coming out of a Pokeball. The video was recorded before this was implemented.
Don't expect this hack to be finished anytime soon. And by this I mean that I'm definitely not finishing it in less than 3 years lol. Right now I just hope to finish it one day!
