As far as I can tell, this is likely the original ribbon from the 1930's Royal 10 typewriter I bought very early on this year, and you can see how degraded and rotten it has become. Also, there are traces of red wax on the ribbon that came from my melter, which somehow dripped into the spools. Not sure how, but you'll likely see it.
PS: Smells as pleasant as you'd expect...not very.
