By July 1864, Union and Confederate armies had been locked in a stalemate at Petersburg for a month. To break it, 9th Corps commander General Ambrose Burnside backed an audacious plan: dig a mine shaft beneath the Confederate lines, pack it with 4 tons of black powder, and blow a breach straight through their defenses.
