The Milwaukee Ghetto: Wisconsins Largest Democrat Voting Block Nick Johnson 2024-10-05 | Killwaukee, Wisconsin. That’s what people here call it. I’m in the part of town that EVERYone told me is the worst place of this place. It was about 10 in the morning on a Sunday on an unusually warm day in late February. Usually in hoods like this, there aren’t too many people up and moving around this early in the day. I came across a lot of people in here that morning. But it didn’t feel sketch. Took me a half a day in here before I let my guard down. I mean everything you hear about this part of town is bad bad bad. It’s famously bad. Now unless you live in this area, you probably don’t know too much about Milwaukee. You might know about their sports teams and their drinking habits. I’m not here for that stuff though. Not this episode. Depending on what site you read and which stats you believe, Milwaukee, Wisconsin is somewhere in the top 10 in the country for crime right now. And the trend is getting worse. And you people love watching this stuff. So I came here as part of a winter road trip in 2024.A lot of people don’t know this, but in the early 70s Milwaukee had the highest wages and highest quality of life for black folks out of any large city in the country. I know. All these black families had moved up here from the south for work and they sure were glad they did. There were all sorts of jobs here, and the livin was good. Almost half of black Milwaukeans earned their living as industrial laborers. They worked at steel mills, they built ships, assembled parts for cars and airplanes. They turned wheat into beer and cattle into steaks. It wasn’t glamorous work but it paid well and homes were cheap. Back then, only Detroit rivaled Milwaukee for black family success. This was the promised land for black laborers. Middle class utopia. Except for the cold. But the ship that was steamrolling forward suddenly began to sink. In the mid 70s, industries here began to collapse. They lost a lot of factory jobs, and all that prosperity came crashing down. Alaska: Where People Live However The Hell They Want To Nick Johnson 2024-09-12 | Alaska. The Last Frontier. They say if you come to Alaska what are you running from or what are you running to?We spent 25 days driving around Alaska as part of a big road trip. And we saw a lot. We got outside of Anchorage. Traveled around to some popular areas and some really random places and met some super fascinating people. It was all wonderful. Huh Kinda. Alaska’s weird. Like nowhere I’ve ever been before. It’s gorgeous, But the people here live a certain way. On their terms. And that’s why I like it here. In the next series, I’m going to show you a lot of Alaska. Most of you have traveled up this way, so I hope this series will keep your attention. Alaska has the same issues your state has, but they have some crazy stuff of their own going on. Believe me. Crime, drugs, poverty, domestic violence, suicide, divorce. Alaska is top 5 in all of those. I know, right? There’s a long PDF you can read on why that is, but the Nick version is - it’s isolated up here, and people have addictions. The native population makes up 15% of the state, and they have some major issues. Alaska’s been called the most dangerous state of all. There’s more murders per capital here than anywhere else. Outside of Anchorage I didn’t get that vibe at all. But stats don’t lie. And the drugs. Man. The drug cartels realized - hey we have a captive audience up here. They love our shit and they’re bored. Drugs and booze have shaken up a lot of this state’s communities. The economy here is shaky. And people are leaving. 11 straight years this state’s lost people. Back in the good ole days oil money was flowing, but now we don’t dig as much for oil, so the free money everyone here gets is slowly going away. It’s down to $1,500 a year now. They say Alaska’s population might drop 2% in the next 25 years. Some say the population here will drop by 150,000, which would set the place back by 40 years. There’s a big labor shorage here. They can’t find enough people to work and grow their business. A lot of that’s cause of rent. It’s high here. And child care. And food. So, a 1 in 5 jobs are filled by temporary workers from outside the state. Some stick around, but many don’t. For the middle class - It’s not that expensive here - houses are about as much here as where you live. And they don’t have income tax. The only sales tax is on the fun stuff like booze and pot and cigarettes. Kim and I did our best to see as much as we could in August of 2024. I Drove Around Texas For A Month. This Place Is Nuts! Nick Johnson 2024-09-07 | No one has explored Texas like I just did. This is the ultimate Texas Road Trip!I spent an entire month driving around Texas in the fall of 2023. We began in Austin the capital, and drove around as much of this state as we could cover in four weeks. And it’s a big state. Longest time I’ve ever spent in a state for a video series. It was crazy. We saw all kinds of stuff. And now I’m gonna share the adventure with you. I took a month and drove to Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, and everywhere in between! And wow what an adventure!Austin is cool. I spent some time at the Broken Spoke, which they call the biggest honkey tonk in the world. Or something like that. Cool place. Old Texas. The kinda Texas I had hoped to see when I was here. Turns out I didn’t see much of that. But I saw a lot of construction and growth and change here. Things that people here aren’t too happy about. Austin is changing. And then, we left. Now, you can see the odometer on the Durango we rented for the month. Thing was practically brand new. The plan was to drive to all the big cities, check out all the cool Texas stuff in between, and then come back to Austin 28 days later. It was late October when we began the trip, and as you’ll see, the first third of the trip was pretty cloudy and dreary. But that didn’t make it any less fun. And remember, all of the details from the cities I stopped at on this trip are in the longer videos. You can find those on my channel. On the way out of town, our first stop was the Tesla factory. It’s a big deal. It’s the biggest building in the country outside of the Boeing factory in Seattle. I marveled at how big the building was, and wondered why Elon Musk didn’t suggest his employees drive his cars. But he doesn’t.This is an example of how Texas is changing. Later in the trip, I’ll show you all the oil shit I saw. That’s still a big thing here. But all this e vehicle stuff is making some moves here in Texas. And sadly, Texas is getting softer and softer with every new Tesla coming into town. My first stop was San Antonio. But on the way there were many things to see. Like Buccees. I spent a month here and my first stop outside of town was buccees. It’s Texans favorite place to get food. Buccess is this giant convenience store gas station monstrosity. They’re all over Texas. Nothing like em. They started out with a goal - we just want to be a gas station with clean bathrooms. Well they are much more than that.Down the road was another little hill country town called Wemberly. Population 2,800. Not much to see here, just a few knick knackky tourist hippie type of places. But down the road was a fun memorable part of Hill Country. The city of Fischer. We were lucky enough to be invited out to an Alpaca Farm that’s way back into the Hill Country hillsides. You can get an idea on just how different the geography is here when you get back into the rural land like this. Down the road was a fun place. We were cruising the backroads of hill country and we passed this place. I was like pull over dammit!It’s the Devil’s backbone. The oldest dive bar in Texas.I wish this place was in full throat when we were here, but it wasn’t. I was getting the locals only macho vibe when I walked in. I told the bartender we’re not from here. She wiped down beer glasses and didn’t even look up and was like you don’t say. Huh.Look at this honkey tonk in the back. My kinda place. This is another bubbling burb. It’s called San Marcos. Lots of people are moving to this little college town. Neat place. There’s 68,000 people and it is growing fast here. There’s a lot of Germans in hill country. The Germans settled this whole region. Back in the early 1900s, 5% of Texans were German. There’s a lot of Catholics and Lutherans up this way. Out in eastern Texas it’s a lot of baptists. We spent three days in San Antonio. This is the Riverwalk. They had an annual Dias de Las Muertos parade when we were here. Neat stuff.The riverwalk is a prize gem of Texas. It’s a big draw, and they take a lot of pride in it. Most of the tourists come here to see the riverwalk. And they come to see the Alamo too. One day driving around here I came across a staging area where they had bussed in hundreds of migrants who had just crossed into the country illegally. This Is What Life Is Like In Small Town Hawaii Nick Johnson 2024-09-03 | So this is the end of the road. The last of a looong series on the state of Hawaii. If this is the first time you found this road trip well you missed a lot. Cause this is the final chapter. You should go back and start from the beginning. We’re on Hawaii’s big island and this is the resort town of Kona. This is where the journey ends. The final three days will be on this island’s western coast. Looking back - after those last three days, I think Kim and I saw every square inch of these islands worth seeing. And now I’m gonna show you.This is where I left off from the last video. So we left Hilo and headed to Kona on day 5 on the island. It was mid morning when we crossed through the middle of this strange land. And almost the entire drive is some variation of volcano stuff. Hawaii has five volcanoes. Two of them are extinct we think. I already showed you how destructive KIleaua is - it’s down here. It’s still very active and causes all sorts of drama when it erupts every year. These two though. Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. They are active. And they dominate the entire middle of this island. And you pass right between them when you drive on Saddle Road. So we spent our last three nights in Hawaii in Kona. It’s the biggest city on the western side of the island. There really isn’t anything much on this side of the island outside of this large touristy town. Kona has 25,000 people. About 10% of this island’s population. It’s really the only cosmopolitan place on entire island. It’s the big island’s big beach vacation epicenter. Especially now that a lot of eastern beaches were wiped away from a Kilauea eruption 6 years ago. So now, if you want big sandy beaches and some sort of surfing ,and to feel like you’re on a Hawaiian vacation, this is the only place on this island that you can do that. Lava ruined the east side of the island, so currently the only place you can see a white sandy beach here is on the western side. And Kona has a few that are sorta okay I guess. Not really.The first beach we were told to go to is called Kahalu'u Bay (Kaha loo hoo). We were really excited cause we heard it has the best snorkeling on the island. But it was closed dammit. For coral spawning. Whatever that means. Well that sucked. I knew the plenty of parking was too good to be true. So we settled on a much less impressive beach. It’s a little spit of sand close to downtown called Magic Sands. Just enough room for everyone.
