In 2005, industrial dredging ships moved into the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka to dig a shipping canal. What their cutter heads pulled from the ocean floor wasn't sand or coral -- it was massive boulders sitting on top of loose sediment in a formation that defied known geology. A former director of the Geological Survey of India examined the core samples and made a statement that forced the Supreme Court to shut the entire project down. The official explanation for what lies beneath that water does not match the physical evidence. And satellite imagery from NASA had already documented the anomaly years earlier -- a pale, unbroken chain stretching across the open ocean that no geological model can fully account for.
Thousands of miles away, off the western coast of India, marine archaeologists conducted over 173 dives into violent, near-zero-visibility water and mapped what appears to be a fortified structure on the seafloor -- stone walls, defensive bastions, and dozens of ancient anchors. The site matched descriptions from texts written thousands of years ago. But then a single stone block was recovered with markings on it that should not have been possible at that depth and that age. One artifact confirmed the site was ancient. Another artifact contradicted everything. As of February 2025, a new government-backed expedition is preparing to go deeper than any previous team -- searching for what lies beneath the ruins that have already been found.
