Although musician C418 (Daniel Rosenfield) retains ownership rights to the original compositions featured in Minecraft, studio Legendary Pictures purchased commercial licenses to remix several of his tracks, working with composer Mark Mothersbaugh to ultimately rework some the game’s music into the heavy dramatic versions heard in movie.

Many critics deemed the inclusion of the tracks as inappropriate. IGN wrote the music off as “a lukewarm interpretation of the original games themes, in every sense of the term,” while critics of The Hollywood Reporter similarly said that it was “pure nostalgia bait,” though it would have benefitted from being in “anything more substantial.”
